Mom’s beauty and style tips
Our mother’s influence us in so many ways. If you look in my refrigerator or my makeup case, it is likely you will see similar products to the ones my mom uses. Some things never get away from us. My mom is 85 years young and so beautiful and full of life and love. One of the images I will always have is of her sitting at her vanity in her bathroom carefully putting on her makeup and doing her hair. She is such a girly girl and style icon. She taught me how to wear my makeup and stressed the importance of natural beauty, never overdoing it, and modesty. My most memorable tip from her is about taking care of my skin. She always taught me that no matter what age, I should NEVER go without eye cream and face moisturizer – when I was 15 she marched me down to the Clinque makeup counter at John A Brown’s in Oklahoma City and bought my first beauty ritual.

Beauty which Departs but Returns

One of my loves as an artist is in creating mini works of art from little things I have found and love. What started as a hobby many years ago became a passion in collecting and creating. Today, in my spare time, I create little jewelry treasures made from findings I pick up every where. They are one of a kind. They each express my love for life, travel, and all things beautiful and are many times inspired by a rainy day on the beach or a treasured poem or writing. I am sharing one of those pieces today that was inspired by the poem below by Julie Sopetran – “Beauty which Departs but Returns”. Beauty which Departs but Returns

The small floating island travels through the canal.

– Open the door, mother! So that we can surprise

that wandering soul who has arrived at our offerings;

the mirrors of the waterways have blinded her…

but she can feel her way, alone, to our house.

Prepare the food. That death may see

that this love of life we offer as a gift

so that she may better understand what the mystery

has bequeathed.

– Yes, dear daughter. Our house, clean, welcomes our

visitor.

Lights. Incense. Tamales. Chairs.

The bed is made with flowers which we bought.

The little floating house is beauty that traverses

by the unparalleled road of all the river banks

we get on and then… Will we return?

I am on a mission for awareness, I want to learn to just be…me. I read the follow quote on my Zen Meditation calendar. Although I do not practice Zen, I am enriched daily by its wisdom and simplicity. I hope to continue to discover the secrets of becoming more aware of the beauty of life each day as it is given to me and embrace it as it happens -in all its many manifestations. Look at the trees, look at the birds, look at the clouds, look at the stars…and if you have eyes you will be able to see that the whole existence is joyful. Everything is simply happy. Trees are happy for no reason; they aren’t going to become first ministers or presidents and they aren’t going to become rich and they will never have any bank balance. Look at the flowers – for no reason. It’s simply unbelievable how happy flowers are.

Where is your essence?

It is completely meaningless to put effort into activities that have no essence.

Let’s just say that “essence” is “that which is”. It is what makes up the substance, the core, the fullness of something…of you, your ideas, your dreams, your work, your love. It is the choicest, most essential part of you! The question I pose is “is it your soul”? Can you misplace it? Can you change it? Increase it? Or is it just the result of “that which is”. Whatever the answer, don’t hide, and don’t be afraid to seek the essence of beauty, love, life, joy, justice, peace, knowledge, wisdom, understanding….in you, your love and in your work. Life is short, be beautiful (pssst….I have a feeling that your essence is more beautiful than you ever dreamed).
