It appears that love is not as statuesque
as you may imagine
as tall as a supermodel
as buff as a bearded hipster
everything you think you love hard
can break
like ice on a pond.
Careful where you walk
at what temperature
and never leave
the love of your life
behind
or they may fall through
the cracks
hidden to the eye.
Love lost
hidden to the mind
from the sight of your heart
left behind.
Blinded by careless acts
unwarned
lost
words too frail to speak
your heart too weak.
A careless contribution
cuts to black
so watch your back baby
for you rarely cared for mine
and all we had
never truly felt
like the love
I deserved.

l'amour et psyche, picot painting by francois edouard picot

L'amour et Psyche by Francois Edouard Picot, 1817, tells the story of Cupid and Psyche. In the Greek mythological story, Cupid would leave every morning before Psyche woke from her sleep. Psyche's outstretched arm shows the space where Cupid would have been sleeping, however he leaves her in the morning. A great depiction of the complexities of love, status and family. "The angel looks back at the sleeping beauty with a goodbye glance– the older cupid teaching us that love, if anything, is fleeting, and you never know when you’ll wake up and your arm will be outstretched around nothing."
